M&B was elated to be selected by Northwell Health to undertake the transformation of the new 10-bed in-patient behavioral health unit at Zucker Hillside Hospital. Drawing inspiration from evidence-based design and the healing effects of nature, our vision reimagines the unit as a restorative, patient-centered environment. Through the thoughtful integration of biophilic design elements, natural materials, calming color palettes, and access to daylight we aim to reduce stress, enhance well-being, and foster a sense of connection to the natural world. In strict adherence to New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) Guidelines, our team conducted a detailed risk assessment to ensure patient and staff safety without compromising aesthetics. Finishes, fixtures, and furnishings were carefully selected to support a secure, soothing, and dignified experience. This newly designed unit is a reflection of Northwell Health’s commitment to innovation in mental health care, offering a space that promotes healing, resilience, and hope.

At M&B, our evidence-based design (EBD) approach shaped every decision, thoughtfully blending biophilic elements,
calming colors, layered lighting, privacy, noise control, flexibility, accessibility, safety, and comfort. Understanding the profound impact of environment on healing, we curated finishes and materials that are as durable as they are therapeutic. Acoustic strategies were carefully integrated to create quieter, more private spaces, while a range of lighting options — from task to ambient to night lights — give patients greater control and support healthier outcomes. Nature-inspired imagery and a strong connection to natural elements bring a sense of peace and familiarity into the healthcare setting. The result is a holistic, restorative environment that not only fosters healing and comfort but also supports the overall well-being of patients, families, and staff.

The project at Northwell Health Zucker Hillside involved a full renovation to allow a reconfiguration of the unit in compliance with New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) guidelines. Although constrained by difficult existing conditions and less than favorable slab heights, the A/E team worked closely to maximize patient safety, staff visibility, and therapeutic engagement. All materials, fixtures, and hardware were selected based on ligature-resistance and durability standards, while maintaining a calming, non-institutional aesthetic. Special focus was placed on door hardware, glazing, bathroom safety, and staff support spaces to meet OMH requirements and create a comfortable environment.
